But my parents ate most of it.įinally, in my late teens, I was allowed to have my own section of the garden. Then we started a backyard garden and got to sample what we grew. We weren't allowed to add any other kind of seasoning to them, and they were often burned. We ate those frozen vegetables that come in a block shape. They'd buy fresh veggies, give me a small bite, and then eat the rest in front of me, saying it's not for kids. ![]() And they usually don't want to hear what it was like for me because it's too upsetting. People talk about all the things they did as kids and I can't relate. No access to information of any kind about other religions. I wasn't allowed to have a guitar, or a skateboard. No clothing that looked too gender-neutral or too "attention-getting." Just plain pink and purple, loose fitting and long sleeved. So I wasn't allowed to have Barbies, but I could have stuffed animals and board games like Checkers. No toys associated with the opposite gender or with modern life. No contemporary novels unless they were assigned in school. TV - only PBS and few shows that were considered ok (mostly family sit coms, game shows, and the news). We were only allowed to play a few video games - Super Mario Brothers, Tetris, and Duck Hunt. I wasn't allowed to have Hello Kitty either. Repeat offenders will be banned from this subreddit.
